Duck Dive
As you approach an oncoming wave, paddle hard and get as much speed as possible.
Duck Diving Is The Difference!
When you have a wall of white water heading for you and getting over it isn’t an option, getting under it, is the only way to go to survive a beating!

The best way to do this is the “duck dive”.

As you may of guessed the name comes from ducks, as they negotiate the waves they dive head first under the waves and pop up the other side unharmed and ready for the next wave.

Surfers do the same thing, driving the nose of the board hard under the wave, then using their foot to sink the back of the board. As the the board dives under the wave, the surfer needs to pull his body as close to the deck of his surfboard as he can before righting the board and heading for the sky and resurfacing.

This is not an easy technique, but a solid duck dive is the difference between a battering and exhausting paddle out back and and quick exit to the line up to score some waves.
Before making contact with the white water, grab both rails halfway between the nose and midpoint of your board.
Push all your upper body weight onto your hands and arms until you feel the nose begin to go under. Point your head down and let your body follow.
Once your body is just below the surface, bend your dominant leg and use that foot to push the tail under the water.
As the wave passes let the flotation of your board lift you to the surface and paddle to the lineup.

“The most common mistake among surfers when duck diving is that they use their shins, knees, or nothing to push the tail of their board under. You have to use your foot under your toes; thats your leverage point”
